Rupert’s South West Coast Path Challenge

What was your challenge?

“My challenge was to complete the 1,015km walk from Minehead to Poole, known are the South West Coast Path, made famous by the book The Salt Path. I had been planning to do the SWCP at the first opportunity, raise funds for charity, and face up to the challenge of completing the walk in one hit over approximately 40 days”

What was your motivation for fundraising?

“Since 2017, I have raised substantial funds for various charities and so this challenge was another opportunity to ask for support for a huge physical challenge. My target was to raise £5,000 each for 4 charities”

What did you find most challenging?

“One might have thought it would be the solitude, the physical wear and tear, or even boredom. But none of these were issues, there were in fact the best bits of the expedition. Probably the most challenging part was the administration of accommodation! I really found the whole experience to be absolutely amazing”

What was the best bit about your experience?

“I couldn’t say that one element was better than any other, but I certainly think that the huge amount of time and head space I had was a huge privilege. Being surrounded by nature all the time and having unlimited time to think about things was a rare opportunity”

My main advice is to have the courage of your own convictions and trust that any thing is possible once fully committed to. Most challenges undertaken to raise money for charity involve an individual stretching themselves. A great way to look at is “there is more in you” and I certainly believe that to be true.
