Taking on London Landmarks Half Marathon

“When I lost my mom at 17, my world was turned upside down. It was a defining moment that taught me the profound importance of community and support in overcoming grief. During those tough times, I desperately needed a lifeline, and that's exactly what "It's Time" offers. They provide resources, guidance, and a nurturing community for young individuals grappling with loss, helping them discover resilience and hope. This organisation’s mission resonated deeply with me, compelling me to fundraise for them and support others on their journey through grief.”

Why did you choose to run for It’s Time?

What did you find the most challenging?

“Fundraising, however, came with its own set of challenges. The biggest hurdle was reaching out for support without overwhelming my network.

People are generally happy to help, but it’s tricky when they are constantly bombarded with requests for multiple causes or even just one. I realized that it’s crucial to communicate why their contribution matters in a clear and compelling way.

For future endeavors, I plan to be more transparent about how and where the funds are being invested. This clarity is essential to help people understand the impact of their contributions. Additionally, providing periodic updates without saturating them with constant requests is key to maintaining their interest and support.”

“Managing the fundraising efforts required clear communication. I made sure to explain why the cause was important, kept my sponsors updated with proof of my progress in the half marathon, and gently reminded them of the cause from time to time. This approach helped build trust and kept them engaged.

How did you manage your fundraising?

What was the best bit about your experience?

“Despite the challenges, the journey was incredibly rewarding. The best part was forging deeper connections with my sponsors and friends. Their unwavering support and willingness to open up and share their own vulnerabilities were truly heartwarming. It reinforced the idea that we are all in this together, supporting each other through life's ups and downs.”

Do you have any advice for anyone setting out on a fundraising journey?

“For anyone embarking on a fundraising journey, my advice is to start with your closest friends. Their support will give you the initial boost of confidence you need. Gradually spread the word, but be mindful not to overwhelm your network. Use clear, impactful messages and be honest and open about your progress. Transparency is absolutely crucial. Show them how their contributions are making a difference, and they’ll be more likely to continue their support.

Reflecting on this experience, I’m filled with gratitude for everyone who supported me and "It's Time." This journey has not only helped me honor my mom’s memory but also allowed me to be part of a community that offers hope and resilience to those in need.”
